True confessions of an average gamer

Ok, I confess.

I am just an average gamer, alright, BELOW average, and most of the time I have a HELL of a fight trying to make it past level 1 on most games!

(this is why my only high score little crowny thing is for the SNES game 'Vegas Stakes', a semi-virtual trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pretty sad when you consider it was literally by SHEER LUCK ALONE that I even got that one! - sob - *grabs another tissue)

I lose and lose and lose, and yet keep going back for more.

You know, I am alright with that since I just LOVE TO PLAY GAMES!!

And that is why I am here; I game, therefore I am.
WHY are you laughing?
I'm being serious here, and I will tell you that IF I am not HERE, that probably means I am off playing one of my consoles.
BADLY.

So who else would like to confess to their lack of gaming prowess?

I think it's pretty obvious that I'm not the greatest gamer around. I'm really good at RTS, RPG and FPS, but those never usually count towards any competitive goal.
When it comes to almost any other type of game I'm very average. I sometimes have a rainman like moment where I'll get a good score but it's rare.

I'm like you, I just love games even though I suck at a lot of them. Btw by mentioning Vegas Stakes you've pretty much guaranteed the loss of that score. I'm tempted to beat it but I see how you got it and I'm not feeling like wasting that much time.

So is there any game at all that you consider yourself good at?

Driving games, and right now my favorite is 'Burnout 2' on the Gamecube.

Second best for me would be FPS games, (Duke Nukem and Max Payne are like brothers to me) and I just finished 'Warhammer 4000-Fire Warrior' on the PS2 last night.

GREAT game, AWESOME artwork and gameplay, EASY level, if you please.

Oh, but I must say that, at least on the easy level, the final boss battle pales in comparison to the others throughout the game.
A bit disappointing, but I will play it again for sure.

Certainly everything I have said here must be taken within the context of the original disclaimer, and that means the games I am 'good' at MUST be on the easy level.

Like 'Wolfenstein 3D 32X' (on the Sega 32 X, here at RU of course)
I cannot play 'I am death incarnate' because I will not make it past level 1.
You get the idea.

I'm glad you mentioned driving games. That's another non high score game I'm good at.

Hey man, welcome to RU. I'm not the greatest gamer either. I wasn't really aware of it till I seen your thread. Well a combination of that and this team contest we're having. I consistently submit the lowest scores of my team and it just kinda put me in check that I am not as good as I thought I was. I confess, I suck compared to a few other gamers on here. But, just like you, I enjoy games no matter what the outcome. And, like dudebro, I mostly enjoy RPG's, I can't get enough of them. Anyways, game on bro, the high score tally is more for ego anyway so don't worry bout it.

^^^Dido for me. I havnet even played / of the games on this site let alone had a chance to get good at them. I normaly play fighting games and action adventure games ( Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid) But that dosent mean I dont have fun around here. Having the highest score is cool but I realize that it takes months if not years of practice on a certain game to get where you wanna be at.

If there is certain game you want to do that with I say focus on that game/kind of games and go for it!!

The way I see it, if you are having fun and enjoying yourself, what does it matter.

My list of beaten games has been a 3 year journey of obsession, frustration and joy. I have had almost 30 years of gaming experience (whoa, that's crazy to think about

) and in that time I still have the same motto, "When it stops being fun, then stop doing it." I'm still having fun, so I'll keep trying to beat games and playing them until I die whether I am good at them or not.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. It's all about the fun.

I have played games all my life, but there are some types that I am not as good at, or don't enjoy as much. For example, driving/racing games just never interested me that much, so I tend to not be as good at them (unless you can drive and shoot at the same time). The exeption I can think of off-hand is Mario Kart, which I love, but only really because you can use weapons.

I think the bottom line is play play play! In my opinion, one of the best ways to improve is to play the same games over and over until you master them. By that point, you should pick-up new skills that can then be applied to other games.

As long as you are having fun, it's a worthy endeavor.

My greatest challenge is usually trying to overcome my exceedingly short attention span. I hate RTS' and puzzles the most and because of that I suck at them.

I think the best way to be good at a game is to find it really fun (adventures for me) or quick and easy (shooters for me). But try not and constrict yourself to a genre or two. There are so many games on this site you'll never run out of new ones to try out.

@JoeGrotowski, I'm with you on the driving simulators, a category that I particularly enjoy myself. I also really enjoy flight sims. Unfortunately, I don't usually have the time available that it takes to play through a lot of the RTS and RPG games. I like them but will usually go for games that take a little less long-term commitment. The key to becoming better at any game though is to just keep plugging away at it.

I've also been a gamer for more than 30 years...dang, I'm old. So far I'm still having a lot of fun and hopefully will continue to.

INDEED, I agree with what you guys are saying:

Tenser, diversity is great and I love all kinds of games I am actually pretty bad at.
Sometimes it is the game's fault (really) when it is an early era game chock-a-block with glitches.

Like the coin-op game LOOPING.
Sometimes your game ends suddenly for no reason whatsoever.
You are flying along in your plane minding your own business and suddenly- game over.
Not even a 'game over' screen, but right back to 'please insert coin'.

NOW I UNDERSTAND why my mother would get so mad when I would ask her for quarters to play the game, and she would say it was a 'ripoff'.

Other such early games seem unwinnable at times as the game itself won't play by its own rules....Or its impossibly hard like 'Uni War S'
'AND YET I KEEP GOING BACK FOR MORE'

Gamenguru, I love those RPG's, so colorful, so fulfilling when achieving the game's goals/ solving the puzzles/ winning the battles.

The artwork and backgrounds make the games seem more like playing a movie than a game, and the storylines actually exceed the quality of most actual movies, in my opinion.

I must agree that the time commitment can practically consume your life if you let it (like I have)
and it makes a world of difference if the 'save points' aren't too far apart.

BTW, you are not old yet my friend so enjoy yourself.

that also sums up the real life experience of las vegas.

we are all average when compared to the world elite gamers. consider this. i have the ru high score at donkey kong (nes version) of 240000 and change, i'm still short of the world record by over 2 million points. Welcome to Twin Galaxies

I was about to start a thread about Twin Galaxies. I was wondering if anyone had gone on there or competed in a sanctioned tournament with them.

I was also wondering if anyone had seen the movie about them?

king of kong? i've seen it. you can get posted scores on there, just do something like speed runs on halo 3 on legendary mode, last time i checked, no one had any posted scores yet.

I cheat in most Racing games to unlock all cars & tracks, I hate feeling confined to having to unlock them >: (

Yes, but you have it in the NES version which is quite a bit different than the arcade version. The NES fixes a lot of the bugs and exploits that you can get in the Arcade version.

Like Tenser, I try out many types of games on here. I favor the games that I can play in one session, although after a while I may try to clear a few games. I'm certainly not the best gamer out there either. I am so bad at Pacman and Ms Pacman it's not even funny.

Funny you should mention being bad at Pac Man » Coin Op and Ms Pac Man » Coin Op - so many times I can't clear the first screen {then other times I can play on and on for no apparent reason, it's weird}

When it comes to getting and holding first place score positions it makes me feel at ease to understand I don't stand a chance against the hardcore Gamers who have earned them, so it doesn't bother me so much since I know we are in the majority here, us lesser Gamers.

But as Dudebro points out, it's all about having fun.
