Most hated cliches in video games ever
Like always, post whatever cliche in video games that just annoy you, make your heart pound, or make you not wanna play the game anymore. Oh, and you can also make a top ten list of hated cliches. I'll start. TIME LIMITS. I cannot stand these things!! First of all, they make my heart pound so hard and fast that I start breathing funny! And second of all, they are just plain ANNOYING!!

I wouldn't call time limits cliche really. I think it's just something that goes well with games in general, not just video games either.

Where in the world are the protagonist's parents? Why can I never see them? Who keeps killing them off?

I like this one. The big one I can relate to this is Kingdom Hearts. Sora was like 15, 16? Where the hell were his parents? lol

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
I'd love to play a game where the main character is the antagonist. Start as a henchman and work your way up to Dark Overlord by beating up the hero and pillaging villages.

Exploding Red Barrels. I'm almost positive the NAZIs would have won world war II if they hadn't frequently congregated around easily explodable barrels.

One game that comes to mind is Dungeon Keeper. You play the keeper and your goal is to lure in adventurers to be tortured and killed. You also have to compete against rival keepers to see who's more evil.

Ooh hoo hoo. Green barrels are even worse in other games. Games like Gauntlet with a poison cloud emitting barrel. And in Crash Bandicoot... the difference between a TNT crate and a nitroglycerin crate.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
I wouldn't say I hate it, because it would ruin most games, but I am tired of levels with all kinds of awesome stuff sitting around in chests where the main character will see them. It's just poor design for a someone trying to defeat the protagonist. For example why does Bowser leave all those blocks for Mario to power up on? He's got minions who can destroy those blocks. Apathy is lethal King Koopa.

When there is a old, rotted wooden door that you cannot blow up or chop through, despite you having nukes and whatever in your inventory. Instead, you must find a key, which is most likely halfway across the base, guarded be dozens of powerful enemies.

Yeah or the really annoying low walls that no mere human can jump over or climb. This is getting better as games get bigger but it's still a problem. Like other annoying things, time limits and chest, it's something we can't really get rid of, the level has to end somewhere.

Although I don't agree I understand what you're saying. Though I'm fine with circumventing the story for the sake of interesting gameplay I know that every game should not be like that.
Besides King Koopa is totally apathetic. He more prominently shows that he is in all recent games. This invokes another cliche. The bad guy is probably going to lose in EVERY game so he doesn't bother with effort. Strangely with Super Mario Galaxy you will note Bowser is dead serious. Maybe innovative schemes give him more confidence in his villainy.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
Enemy animals in 3D action games. They are somewhat easy to implement realistically, but when it comes down to it(my experiences), they just don't present a lot of IQ diversity and are typically just large projectiles that stick to you and then repetitively do damage until you do away with them.

Love stories are hard to avoid. There's only so many core story concepts available and that one appeals to almost everyone on some level.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
It would be cool if the protagonist who is out to save the princess/girlfriend actually turns out to be some crazed looney who doesn't even know the princess/girlfriend. But not like Cloud. It's more like he's straight up bat crap crazy.

I don't know of any games like that but I bet some exist. That'd be an interesting concept to try.

Then you turn out to be the antagonist and everything you saw as the game progressed was all a delusion.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
Well how about some of those "dating" games where the protagonist is basically date raping? I think that qualifies as a protagonist who doesn't realize he's an antagonist.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
Your Mission control / voice-with-an-internet-connection turning out to be the bad guy. It's cool the first few times it happens, but when OVER 9000 GAMES DO IT it might be more of a twist if they weren't evil.
It's actually why I liked Bad Company. your mission-control is out for you from second 1.

Re: Most hated cliches in video games ever
What I also really hate is that the main character in video games don't talk. I can name a few games like this: Earthbound, Zelda, Mario, Dragon Warrior/Quest, and Kirby. Why don't they ever talk? That is a mystery that will never be solved.

Haven't you played the first one? The part where Sora hears the storm and goes outside, his mom says "Sora, dinner's ready! Sora?"
