boss battles

I want to know what you guys think the best boss battles in rpgs are

try to find videos to link to of the game play because I want to watch them for reference

if you can and are not feeling to lazy tell me what you like about the battle and the game play.

Every RPG boss battle should be demanding and painful. It should require you to expend most if not all of your resources including all those fancy items they've collected.

MP is easily regained but if I'm blowing through all of my hi-potions and ethers to beat him, then it really feels gratifying.

They should also have nasty tricks that frustrate you to no end. I'd say along the lines of Wrexsoul from FF3. (I tried to find a video but all of them were with overpowered characters spamming Ultima or using a crappy x-zone gimmick.)

is that the boss where it possess one of your characters and you then have to kill that character in order to have the boss reappear so you can attack it? in cyan's dream? that boss was a pain.

Well, I don't know, every boss I've ever fought in an RPG was either too easy or too hard.

But now that I think of it, FFX's bosses were interesting because you could have everybody in you're team fight in one battle (not at the same time though).

Like FF6's final battle? (Never played FFX.)

I prefer them to be very difficult. Nothing worse than a mediocre boss battle.

Wait, here's an idea for you that I don't think's been done before. What about an RPG with a difficulty setting?

The easy way to do a difficulty setting is to make hard have more random encounters and the enemies be higher levels with more stats and have items be more expensive and rare or just make leveling up harder.

I think a better way is to have the difficult level have a better AI. The enemies aren't necessarily stronger and more numerous, just smarter.

Get rid of the shops entirely. There's nothing worse than having to grind for money.

So without shops you'd get gear from monster drops or treasure chests?

Btw some of us like farming monsters for money and items. Don't get me wrong, I hate tedious grinding too but some games make it fun. This ties in with Kongs suggestion about AI.

If the enemies have some intelligence the grind isn't as annoying. Nothing worse than predictable enemies. Variety is important.
Personally I'd like to have some grind and farm but make the enemies learn from previous encounters. That would make it so after a while you're really battling for that Imp Armor or super elixer.

Btw it has been done before. I know Oblivion has a difficulty option. It's a noticable difference when you turn that slider up. I think it just raises the stats of the enemies though(like a lot of hit points and constant regen,ect). Mass Effect also has a difficulty option. Pretty sure Fallout 3 does too but I'm not sure.

although neither are really rpg in nature, i did like the huge army battles and one on one battles in suikoden for the change of pace

Maybe make each area have experience points and leveling. So if you grind in an area then all the enemies in that area would continue to get harder because they are leveling up just like you and maybe slightly faster than you. That could be on the difficult setting.

Like 7th Saga? If you leveled too high you actually couldn't beat some of the bosses.

I really think FF6 does it perfectly. You never have to grind, but you could if you wanted to. The only problem is that grinding makes the game a cakewalk.

7th Saga? I'm not sure about the bosses but the enemies do not level with you. Maybe this is why those damn bosses kicked my ass all over the place.

The triple threat boss at the end of Ninja Gaiden (NES) was always tough.

Its only with those damn apprentice battles.

1. An apprentice will always have the same level you have.
2. An apprentice will always have double the MP they should have at their level.
3. You will do 25% less physical damage to an apprentice.
4. You can not run from an apprentice battle.
5. Apprentices are immune to all status ailments.
6. The apprentice you must fight in Patrof Castle in order to obtain the Star Rune is a special case. His level will always be 5 above the level your leader was at when he presented the Wind Rune to the elder in Eygus, regardless of your current level.

Oh yeah those boss battles were epic. The difficulty was already so high in that game but then they toss in the ultimate boss battle of cheapness.

Mike Tyson is still the hardest boss battle in my mind.
Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts comes close.

The coolest boss in my mind is Mecha Hitler.
The game replays the moment you kill him!
