Tell me something about farming

Up until recently, I've never heard this term before in my life.

I'm just wondering what it is, and how do you know if you're doing it when playing the games.

EDIT: I know the term farming, but it doesn't have anything to do with video games.

Re: Tell me something about farming

basically farming is something in game you can do to rack up points, enemies that regenerate for instance, levels with quick one ups that you can replay over and over, basically if your not playing the game the way it was intended then your probably farming. games that allow you to do this are marked as farms and do not count towards you trophy count.

Re: Tell me something about farming

In Super Mario Bros. 3 in the second stage I almost always do the 1up trick to get 99 lives. Well more like 20-30 now days but same difference. People would say that is farming. I know if people really wanted to they can kill those Mario 1, 2 & 3 scores with ease with those old tricks. Grew up on Mario so know them all, but I'll leave those scores for those that can do it with out them. Good Gaming people.

Re: Tell me something about farming

I will give you a few examples

the general jist goes that farming is acceptable and needed for most games.

for example
in metroid if you need health you just repeatedly kill enemies over and over untill your health is satisfied.

this is considered farming because you are stopping normal progress through the game. you are not moving on to the next boss and what would be assumed to be a normal pace.

where retro is concerned is in score competition a player can play mega man and just repeatedly kill enemy's for an infinite amount of time or until they beat the previous high score.

farming takes the fun out of competing because it just becomes who can play the game longer which is boring and frowned upon.

Re: Tell me something about farming

Also we use the term a little loosely. The real definition is described above. But for Retro Uprising scores we also include cheat codes, infinite continues, passwords and all other score altering tricks in the umbrella term "Farm".

If we can't confirm the score is 100% legit then we call it farm.

You can still compete for the high score in a game that can be farmed and you can get that high score legitimately or by farming but either way since we can not tell how you did it does not affect your overall high score count or leaderboard stats or Retro Uprising experience points. And that game can't be used in contests or tournaments.

If you get a trophy that is marked as farm it does not mean we think you are cheating. It means we can not confirm that you did not cheat so we are not officially counting the score.

Re: Tell me something about farming

Thanks, I am a little more clear now on what farming is. Where does it indicate whether or not a game is farmable?

Re: Tell me something about farming

It will say "view high farms" instead of "view high scores".

You know, when you're playing Harvest Moon, it's a totally different story.
