Hello Everyone

Hey,

I am brand new to the forums and emulation as well. Trying to learn all that I can about emulation and how it works and how I can experience decades of gaming history for the first time.

I'm actually visually impaired, and growing up, I didn't have the opportunity to go to arcades or really play video games at all. Thanks to the progression of technology, however, I am now at point where I can play games to a decent extent and wish to experience everything I missed out on as a kid.

I am struggling though because I am not computer savvy, have no programming experience, and am overwhelmed by the amount of information on emulation and don't really know where to start or how to dive in deeper and handle the more advanced side of emulation. I've certainly been able to download an emulator and a rom, and I was successful at running it, but I've read about compiling and collecting successive updates to stay current with MAME, using certain programs to get all your files in order and see what you still need, installing artwork and bezels, adjusting hlsl settings to get a better or more classic screen aesthetic, editing config files to makes things exactly how you want them, and so much more; and all of that sounds super awesome, but I just don't really know the best way to get started with all that. I tried to just jump in and learn on the fly, but the more I read, the more I don't understand.

So I'm hoping that I can learn a lot from this community and in doing so, I also hope that I can use that acquired knowledge to discover many games for the first time, but also I hope that I can in turn help others who are at a similar level as me.

Anyways, thanks for letting me be apart of this community. I look forward to learning and experiencing new things.

Re: Hello Everyone

Welcome to Retro Uprising and emulation.

To play games here you will need a computer running Windows. Phones, Macs and Linux will not work here.

If you are on Windows then you will also need to use one of these web browsers.
  1. Internet Explorer - MS Internet Explorere is different than MS Edge. To open click Start and then type iexplore then press enter.
  2. Microsoft Edge - Click "More options (...)" from the top left-hand corner of the browser and choose "Open with Internet Explorer".
  3. Chrome - first install IE Tab for Chrome and then go to IE Tab options and add "http*retrouprising.com/*" to the "Auto URLs"
  4. Opera - First install Chrome Extensions for Opera and then install IE Tab for Chrome.
  5. Firefox - Install IE Tab for Firefox.
  6. Firefox version 40 Portable - This is an older web browser. It is good for playing games here but don't use it to surf other websites.

Another way to play retro games, also only for Windows computers, is to follow the instructions at RetroUp

If you are not on Windows or just want a 3rd option, this link will help - ROMs and Emulators. This is an older list and some of the links on it are dead but many of them still work.

This isn't neccessary. Using existing pre-compiled emulators will work. I would only suggest this if you are already computer savy.

Someone here might help you with this but there are other websites that will be able to help you more with that.
