Gamecube Memory Card help

Just noticed my memory card has been acting a bit strange lately. I haven't had issues with a Gamecube memory card since a Madcatz one back in like 2004. Those are notorious for failing though so I've heard.

I think my memory card is corrupted, but its being somewhat odd about it. Most games I try are fine, but then will randomly tell me the data is corrupted at some point and needs to be erased. Only for that one game however at the time it will need to be erased and a new file made. All my games seem to be suffering this fate one by one, maybe not right off the bat, but they do eventually, and when they do the memory card is insistent on considering them corrupt from then on in.

I have finally received the message that my memory card needs to be formatted twice in succession when using my wii. Both times I said okay, and it told me that "The format may not have worked". I tried to get it to ask me again, and it wouldn't. It just began showing all my save data. Just took my memory card to my gamecube and it acted normal again as well. To my knowledge the only way to format a memory card is to have it ask you.

I'm tempted to purposely take the memory card out while saving a game so I can get the format message again, but that may do more harm than good?

Memory card is an official Nintendo white memory card 1019 block which is equal to 64 mb I believe.

Losing my data is not an issue, I copied most of my important games to my other unofficial 512 block memory card to be used at a friends house and have all my data on it. So all I'm losing is games I don't mind restarting (or action replaying back to unlock everything).

Memory card looks like this:

Any help would be great.

Re: Gamecube Memory Card help

You can try a manual format by simply deleting all of your files on the memory card.

There is no way to manually trigger the format procedure on the system. Alternatively, you can interrupt the saving activity. I highly recommend that you turn off the power while it is saving instead of pulling it out to avoid physically damaging either component.

It is also possible that the physical memory storage in the card (Flash or EEPROM) has failed, in which case the card will never be reliable again, so your only choice is to get a new one.

Re: Gamecube Memory Card help

Pretty glad I bought that second one then. I had no use for a second one back when I did, but it was like a year ago, and I was shocked to still see memory cards, and they said it was the last they were selling. So I bought that 32 MB one while I had the chance. It's third party though, Intec I think, so I've always trusted it less :-/

Re: Gamecube Memory Card help

Bump

So getting back to this today. I shut off the game while it was saving like 10 times. Apparently changed nothing. Absolutely any game I try now says its corrupted, so I'm at that point of nothing to lose. Manually deleted everything. Then I made a save file in Timesplitters 2, and it actually wasn't corrupted when I rebooted the console, which normally it would. So did I actually manually format it?

Something interesting to point out is later I came across a game file on my memory card with no name, and an empty block thing rather than a picture. All it said was it took up 32 blocks. I deleted it, but I jsut thought I'd point that out.

Not sure if I can trust my memory card though. think I'm just going to double-save everything for a bit. Is that a good plan?

Been using my other memory card as of late, and it's held up fine. Then again, it was new as of 2010, and hadn't gotten any use until these last few months really. The one that's corrupted I bought used, and used it from 2008-2012

Re: Gamecube Memory Card help

The only time I've had memory card issues was when I had unofficial ones, they're cheap for a reason.

I'm almost sure that Sony makes those crappy PS2 Madkatz memory cards that only work with certain games. It's a con-spiracy I tells ya! They want you to feel like you absolutely have to buy official memory cards.

Re: Gamecube Memory Card help

Getting off topic, was it just me, or did you see these:

more often than the single memory cards when it came to ps2 in stores. They wanted to sell you 2 memory cards all the time it seemed.
