The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals might be barking up the wrong mushroom.
On Monday, the controversial organization issued a press release attacking iconic Nintendo mascot Mario for wearing a 'Tanooki' suit in his latest adventure, the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land, which hit shelves on Sunday.
"Tanooki may be just a "suit" in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an animal, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur," PETA says.
The raccoon-like suit, which grants Mario the ability to glide across the screen, has been a part of the franchise since first appearing as a power-up in 1988's Super Mario Bros. 3. In the new game, Mario acquires the suit not by doing something lousy to a Tanooki, but by snagging a Super Leaf.
Still, PETA insists this encourages animal abuse.
"Tanukis are real-life raccoon dogs who are beaten and, as PETA's undercover exposés show, often skinned alive for their fur," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "This winter, everyone can give raccoon dogs and other fabulous animals a 1-UP by keeping our wardrobes fur-free."
To help prove their point, PETA has even commissioned a crude parody video game called "Super Tanooki Skin 2D" in which players try to re-capture their skin from a flying Mario (Warning: Kind of disturbing, and totally not fun.)
It's just the latest in a long line of PETA game complaints. In 2008 they went after Cooking Mama for not being a vegetarian, while just last year they parodied challenging downloadable platform hit Super Meat Boy for starring a piece of raw meat.
Nintendo has yet to comment, though we're pretty sure it will sound like a hand slapping a forehead.

Once PETA learns that you kill digital sheep for wool, cows for food and leather, pigs for food {not to mention putting the poor, helpless digital pigs through the pain and humiliation of wearing saddles and being ridden by players' characters} , it's game over for sure.

Along with thousands and thousands of other games where animals are manipulated in any way.
PETA needs to MYOB, IMO.

Other four - letter abbreviations come to mind but this is a PG 13 forum.

I just played the game peta made that they say in the link and all I can do again is shake my head u play as a Tanooki with no fur on chaseing a flying mario that is dripping blood from the Tanooki suit he is wareing and when u finally catch him it says #*@# Mario that is a animal skin.

#1: Not to troll but the game they put up is a little challenging.

#2: They chose Mario because of Super Mario Land 3D Coming out soon and the massive advertising campaign they have ben doing for it (Mushroom Pizza and a whole walkthrough world for 1500 people over this weekend)

I give the guys at PETA Credit, they know exactly what to target and how to abuse others advertising campaigns...

Is it rediculous? It sure is, but it won't deter people to buy the games nor will it bother any of us gamers (Somewhere around 40-45% of the world now) so meh, just smart business.

I guess I see this in a different way, but I hope you understand why,

That's insane.
You know, the people of PETA and their 'followers' seem to be overlooking a very important point here {and this is only one of many}:

When you eat meat, you're doing the humane thing, because it's already dead.
When you eat vegetables, they're still ALIVE.


It seems to me the same applies when it comes to wearing fur.

I think my vegetables are pretty dead when I take them out of the can or freezer. Even when they're "fresh" they've been technically dead for quite some time I'd imagine.

Of course anything in a can is dead.

I also love how PETA doesn't want you to eat meat, instead sticking to a grain or veggie diet, but they don't consider how many animals, mice, rabbits, snakes, etc are sucked up into combines and harvester equipment.
