Golf Tournaments
As I was listening on how Tiger Woods just won another tourney I thought it might be fun to have a video golf tournament series here at RU (The RGT, Retro Golf Tour). This thread is just here to see if there might be some interest for this. If there is enough interest, I'll talk to our "all knowing, all wise" administrator and contest mod about setting it up.
What I was thinking was to go through the NES golf games and then setting up a tourney for each game, then set up pairings for each tourney (I was thinking maybe one tourney every couple of months).
As for prizes, either a badge of some sort or maybe put a small amount of points for each tournament (kind of like an entrance fee).
Let me know what you guys think.

I don't really like golf but that sounds like a good idea. Probably something with tokens, more than badges. Unless it was a badge kinda like the pass the puck badge but with only one game and you get it if you win the tourney. Good idea, even though I probably won't participate.
EDIT: Well.....maybe I will. It all depends on how I am feeling.

Just the best one!
Ten if you get chance you should try out Super Swing Golf on the Wii, very close to swinging a real club, if you come through inside or outside you will slice or hook the ball accordingly. Tekka if you like golf at all you will enjoy this as well it has a strong anime feel and story to it.
I'll see you in the First Annual RetoUprising Open!

It's good to see some life on this. I like the handicap thing, I'll have to learn about them (I know how to do it for bowling, but not golf). Right now we have 7, I would like more but will start with 8. I will wait until the end of the week and go from there. I was thinking of doing things like projected cuts, a point system, and a best score per course page (kind of like the tour). Any other ideas or questions are surely welcome.

How much would we put up for points. If everyone playing has thousands, we could make it like 500-1000. If not, we could make it lower (depending on how much the lowest person has). Otherwise, you will be putting a cap on the game and only those with lots of points will be able to play. Then again, that would make it more exclusive. Your call sabby.

How would you like to start the handicaps? Just have everyone start with a 0, then base it as the results come in, or have a few practice rounds?

Options - You can create save states to each hole in NES games and submit screen shots of scores after those holes or movies (animated or keystroke).

I'm more than willing to take the reigns on this one. I will however, need some assistance from our good friends Tenser and Kong. As for the handicaps, I think they should be determined after one or two tourneys. I was also wondering, do you guys want to do it like the pros, 4 rounds, combined lowest score wins or a different scoring system?

Do it like the pros, and two tourneys will give us 8 rounds which is enough to base a realistic handicap on.

The handicap is OK to me because some people don't know what the different clubs do. One problem with the handicap that I just thought of, I want to encourage people to come in even if we are already started, with a handicap system, it would be difficult to do and be fair to those players.
I don't thing a traveling badge is necessary but a tournament championship badge would be cool.
As for the points, we will see what we can do, I don't want to discriminate against people with low point totals.
Should we determine the winner by tournament wins, most points won(kind of like money leader) or a different point system.
I don't mind if it gets a little complicated, I will take care of things once we are all agreed about how we play and the rules are set. I don't want to leave any loose ends before we get started.

We might have to limit it to NES games since those are the only games we can record a score right now. I was thinking of setting up pairings and then having one of the people issue a challenge to the other in the pair. Is there a way to see how long a person plays a game during a challenge?

When the score is posted to the High Score Screen Shot thread the time is always attached even if it is a challenge. If you do something that does not post to that thread such as using save states then the time is not saved but in that case you could use key stroke movies which would allow you to get the play time by watching it.
I vote no to a handicap. I can not win a golf game without a handicap but if I won with a handicap then I did not really win.
I do think when you pair people you should try to pair according to ability.

The pairs in challenge mode are basically to keep everyone honest about their score. The time issue is being addressed because the second person could try to replay the round if they didn't like the score. With a check on the time, we could see if it was reasonable and if they try to hit the back button a zero would show up causing a withdraw from the tournament.
The pairings for the first two rounds would be completely random, the third and fourth would be by scores in the first two rounds (I think that's how the pros do it).
The handicap is basically to even the playing field. If you guys want to make this a scratch tournament that is fine by me.
I would also like (but am not limiting to) golf games that show the scorecard at the end of the round. Stat nerd reasons=}

Just a suggestion from the Contest Mod here.
I would vote for the handicap. I know it seems cheesy but a handicap really is a major part of golf just as much, if not more than bowling. It rewards those who improve while ensuring that we don't punish those who are new to the game. Hitting the A button three times isn't the problem. People who play golf like Hobbes and myself know how to adjust for wind direction and speed, altitude differential, drop conditions, green curvature, etc...
Do you want to play this as a League/Season or as a Tournament?

Definitely League/Season. Do we have enough NES Golf games in the arcade to pull this off? Or are there any other suggestions to record scores without cheating?
