After the commercial failure of Radar Scope, Nintendo's company president asked Shigeru Miyamoto to create an arcade game to save the company. Miyamoto came up with the idea of a game in which the playable character has to make his way through an obstacle course consisting of sloped platforms, ladders and rolling barrels. Miyamoto named the game Donkey Kong, and its main protagonist "Jumpman". The game was surprisingly successful. "Jumpman" was called "Mario" in certain promotional materials for the game's release overseas; his namesake was Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America's office/warehouse, who barged in on a meeting to demand an overdue rent payment. Eventually Jumpman's name was internationally and permanently changed to Mario.

Since we are on the subject of the names for SMB. Why is it that in the early games it was Princess Toadstool and then got changed to Princess Peach?

Peach is her first name. Toadstool is her last name. I think they're calling her Peach now is because they wanted her to have a first name and be called that because she is obviously more than the damsel in distress to Mario at the start of Super Mario 64 (she invited him to cake, you would give a feast to honor a hero). And since friends call each other by their first names, that's probably why they use the name Peach instead of Princess Toadstool.

No, Robotnik was always the American name, and Eggman was the japanese game, then they changed it for some reason, in sonic adventure when Sonic made a really dumb fat joke just to set up for it, then he embraced the name or something. I really don't care unlike the super-fanboys that say

OMGZ ITSZ ROBBOTNIKK 1137 N00BZ S3GA SUCKS NOWZ!!

and then later say

OMGZ MADDWORLDD IS AWESOMEZ!

while they still said sega sucks because they happen to make some good games and some bad games now, and have become an AVERAGE game development house.

Holy Moly! I knew Mario had some games, but not that many.

I voted for SMB3. I can honestly say that I've only played less then 10 Mario games in my life though.

I messed up and voted for SMW. Then I realized I messed up even more because the poll only has the weirdo genesis version(wth?). I can live with voting for SMW for snes but that genesis one is junk.

I meant to vote for Super mario all stars. It's the best option since it has 1-3, lost levels and some had SMW.

ok, the super mario world on genesis has to be a hack right? i mean that can't be a game that was actually made by a licensed company. that is the most awful game i have ever played. ever.

It is a pirate.

A hack is when you take an existing game and edit it. Example Sonic The Hedgehog » Super Nintendo is actually Speedy Gonzales Los Gatos Bandidos with hacked Sonic sprites.

A pirate is when a company makes a new game from scratch without a license. That is what this is. Nintendo nor Sega gave permission for this game to be created.

I changed the poll to fix the SMW - genesis option. I believe it was a typo and I'm almost positive those 19 votes were for the Snes version. My apologies to anyone who likes the pirated version.

@NT- feel free to correct me if you meant to put the genesis one on the poll. It's easy to change back.
