Sorry to have to say this but Earthbound is very similar to a FF game, it just has a modern setting and characters. I really liked it but it's not any better than your average FF game. Stuff like FF tactics blows the doors off earthbound, it's not even a debate.

Have you even played the two games? They are very similar and to be honest I wasn't impressed with that fact. Every FF game is different from the last(besides the lame FFX-2). FF games are usually more complex and take more effort to complete, not just grinding.
In the end you asked about the franchises. FF has more good games by a longshot. Earthbound has TWO and they are very similar to each other. Sorry but this topic was doomed from the start.
