See I have to disagree somewhat. I agree that Roddenberry tried to have a similar dynamic, but for me my biggest complaint with STTNG is that I never felt that the characters were ever as close as they were in TOS. I like the stories in TNG, but I just think that all the characters eventually took a back seat to Picard and Data, and Riker just kind of went into the background too. Also, as much as I think Picard and Data were great the characters just didn't have the same spark in the relationship area somehow. Don't get me wrong, I still love STTNG, but the holy trinity of Trek (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) is just tough to top. To be fair, until the original crew Trek movies, the other characters didn't get much development either, but the relationship between the three was so tight, it worked for me. Plus, I really liked the coolness that was Kirk. He could be very tough when he needed to be, compassionate, and smart all rolled into one hero. I really like Picard too, but I really didn't care as much about any of the characters in TNG except for Data and to some extent, Worf.

That being said, TNG is still one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever made and smokes about anything on T.V. today. And, I have watched (and continue to watch) the episodes over and over.
