I liked the drawing of magic. It was interesting trying to find all those different hidden draw points and made magic a rare commodity rather than just a boring MP system. I also liked the idea of equipping espers was much more important than level gains. No longer grinding for exp was a great idea.
As for FF7, I liked the idea of equipping materia to equipment. This was ruined because of the ability for any character to equip any materia, especially the horrid idea of ability materia. This made every character nearly identical except for their limit breaks, which mostly did the same damage anyways.
Both games suffered from the use of FMV sequences and obnoxiously emo characters.
