I think many of us started on EVG. There was a link to EVG from a local radio station where I live by a DJ who is really into gaming, that's how I found it.
After going through their forums, there was a mention of a site called onVGP (mostly for those of us who wanted to play Mario or Zelda games). Eventually onVGP (due to serious technical difficulties) became what you see today as Retro Uprising.
I very rarely go to EVG anymore (I couldn't tell you when I last logged on) due to my loyalty to this site. While I was writing this post I checked out EVG and noticed this (
