I stand corrected.
I had some more goes today and it seems you get 9 lives, which is why I wasn't getting to 'game over' any time quickly. So you can't keep losing lives forever and there's no reason for the score to be 'assassinated'. Indeed the game speeds up quite a bit so kudos (and apologies) to elrod21!
The scoring system is a bit skewed in this game - looks like you get 1 point for crushing enemies and most of your points (thousands) come from completing each screen, preferably quickly.
