I had something similar this week and I run windows 7 as well. In my case it was windows updates causing the problem. I noticed in task manager svchost.exe using a lot of CPU time so I checked windows updates and there were a bunch there.

This was strange because they hadn't shown up in the system tray. In any case I installed them all and rebooted and it was fine after. Might be something to check.
