I guess it all depends on how much a person believes Japan should stay true to its 1947 constitutional amendments. ISIS is scary, and its members cruel, but it is a group that is unlikely to outlast the potential negative consequences of Japan producing weapons and finding a market in war technology.
No one looking at this scenario realistically believes that Japan is going to start anexing China, or anything like that. If the good people of Japan want to undo 70 years of relative peace so that they can win a hollow revenge victory over two beheaded men, it will mean Japan stockpiling weapons that will eventually be sold or dismantled or distributed throughout the country's newly armed forces.
It might sound like hippie nonsense, but Steven Pinker has the right of it. Re-frame violence as a problem to be solved rather than a contest to be won. Obv he wasn't saying that we should go out and dismantle our fighter jets, but insurgent groups are only going to stop popping up in Syria and Iraq if these countries achieve stability. Be it political, or sociological or economic.
I also think it's important that we not go waving our fingers at the Islamic faith in general. ISIS is only a
self-proclaimed Islamic state, and their view of the world and how it applies to the Quran is warped to their ends. They are their own brand of crazy.
