Guest ships can be accessed on stock settings as well, but you have to know the command. You'll also never see a cab in Japan without the guest ship DIPs enabled -- it's definitely the generally accepted way to play, and you cannot access all of the game's content without it as the conditions for certain bosses to appear rely on having a guest ship in stock. Seahawk's score on this site also uses a guest ship team. I figured I would play one of the Batrider teams to start with in case it was determined that they _weren't_ allowed, but it wasn't very clear from Wolf's response -- Normal mode only extends as far as course selection, not team composition.
