What happens in this game is you go into the dungeon, and you either die or make it back out safely. Either way the game presents you with a Gold score for the high-score table, and this is what gets used for the purposes of RU scoring.

However, if you make it out safely you get to keep your gold and/or items for the purposes of building your store and achieving other tasks in the game. (If you die whilst carrying a safe you keep half your gold).

The missus then pinches all your gold (hmmmm, quite realistic that bit) and the next time you set off into the dungeon you start with a 'score' of 0 Gold again.

So you want to keep the using the same save slot and pick up where you left off each time. As far as I can tell, the only way to get a large high score (ie 'Gold' score) is to collect lots of Gold in a single dungeon mission. Because if you die or even if you get out safely, your gold score resets to nil for the next trip.
