Depends on why you are not giving school a full chance. If you are blowing off school so you can smoke pot all day in your mom's basement then yeah, you will regret it when you wake up 10 years later and realize you are still doing the same thing. If you are blowing it off because you have a good plan that doesn't require more school or because you want to spend some time figuring out who and what you want to be before taking the next step then you probably will not regret it. Traveling, starting a career, finding something you care about or going to college are all good options when you are 18. Goofing off and doing nothing while your parents or the government take care of you are poor choices that you will regret.
I think taking a year off before jumping into college is normally a good idea. I think 18 is too young to know the direction you want the rest of your life to head. Don't use the year off to do nothing though. Try new stuff. Come up with a long term plan (even just a vague one) that you like.
