If you read/listen to Retronauts -- heck, if you just like video games in general -- you should be very, very excited about Disney's upcoming
Wreck-It Ralph. Their love letter to retro gaming comes from a place of sincere love, and features the creative talent of director Rich Moore, who directed some of the best-looking and funniest episodes of
The Simpsons and
Futurama. Based on the trailer alone,
Ralph looks to be
Who Framed Roger Rabbit for the world of video games, and if it's anything like Robert Zemeckis' 1988 tribute to classic cartoons, Disney's latest shouldn't disappoint when it hits theaters this November. Check out the trailer if you think I'm slightly biased (and I am):
Seeing as the
Wreck-It Ralph trailer went live during E3, Disney Interactive had a very surprising addition to their booth: a mock-up of a Fix-It Felix cabinet, the fictional game in which Ralph plays the antagonist. Having not seen the trailer before checking out the Disney booth, stumbling upon this disheveled (and unfortunately, unplayable) machine filled me with about 30 seconds of confusion due to the realistic battle damage and authentic, mid-'80s style Nintendo-esque art. Kudos to Disney for creating such a great promotional tool, all while trusting the casual attendee to figure things out on their own. Though I assume their reps were haunted by questions about the fate of Fix-It Felix for days. And if the machine's lack of functionality comes as a disappointment, you can always play
the Fix-It Felix game in Flash form on the movie's official website.
