Yeah, but he did not get to the first boss, after the first little red demon is a kind of "space save" where you do not have to go back to the very beginning. At the end of the level, you get a key to enter the next level (at the end of the first level is some huge ogre type creature).

I didn't make it that far either (sorry I should have posted my actual screen shot). I assumed that the red demon was the boss. I have never made it any farther.
