I think you're thinking too small. At our current level of technology it doesn't seem realistic but as things progress the boundaries will be pushed and sentience will certainly be one of those being pushed to it's breaking point, as this early project hints at.

Btw it's not a matter of it wondering what it was designed for. I see it more like demonstrating abstract thought. Then the "why" has more meaning. Why do I exist? Why am I smart enough to question why I exist? If I am smart enough to ask, then why am I not alive? And so on.
