Not actually accessing it to play but yeah those games had a steep learning curve and required a time commitment that most people aren't ready to give to an MMO. It's like how Windows made PCs more accessible to the average user. Blizzard was smart and focused on ease of use and casual play while balancing it with end game content for the more dedicated users.
Like I said before I never played WoW, I played FFXI. Being the direct competition I've read/heard a lot about why it was so damn good. FFXI is an awesome game but it's difficult and time consuming. You can't just log in for an hour and get much done, same for most traditional MMOs. WoW turned that on it's head.
TMT has a point about popularity not equaling good. Maria Carey passed Elvis for hit singles or w/e and I think she sucks. I also think Elvis sucks but that's not important really.
