Only a very small portion of Nazi soldiers were doing anything that would constitute war crimes. I would guess much less than 0.01%. Which as far as the soldier level of a war goes is probably really close to the same % in any other army. Most Nazis were just typical soldiers.

I think it is very easy and common for the average soldier to be shocked and sickened by what the other side is doing no matter who it is. I am shocked that people are shocked that soldiers do horrible things. Honestly what did you expect would happen if 18 year olds were convinced it is OK to kill because the other side is some how less human or righteous than their side.
