And this ceiling-floor nonsense be lame. Why not just round to what ever the number is closer to?
I know it sounds dumb because it's basically just rounding... but it's used for many things, like probability, statistics, and I can't remember when I used it for programming, but since it's specifically rounding to the next integer, and it has its own symbol and all, it can be usefull.
log (44!) + .4 gets gets pretty close too, but I'm guessing that's not the answer either...

You can use any of the mathematical terms that are usually used in writing mathematical expressions: plus sign, minus sign, multiplication, division, square root. You can only use 4s. Your expression could have any of the symbols. You could have 4 to the 4th, you could have 4 factorial, you could have 4.4. You can use anything that you'd see in a mathematical expression as fair game.

There is no secret info such as a wife being dead or bribing the judge. The judge had a rational reason for splitting the money the way he did and the wives agreed that it made sense after it was explained to them.
The answer is a rational explanation. Not a trick. The answer is more closely related to math than your answers have been so far.
Ok, here it goes... originally, when he was married to his first wife, he was going to give her 100% of the money he planned to leave his wife... sounds stupid, bare with me...
Then, when he got remarried, he planned to gives his wives 3500, giving 42.5% to the first wife and 57.5% to the second. (more or less)
When he married the third wife, he planned to give 6500 to his wives, giving 23% to the first wife, 30% to the second, and 47%.
So the judge decided to give 2% more to the first wife, 7% (both percentages based on the units place of the first percentage given to both) more to second wife and had to take 9% from the third wife to even things out. Why did he give that percentage to the first two, and take away from the second? Because before he got remarried they would have gotten a higher percentage, but because then the second wife would get more money, he decided both would get 37.5% of the money and the first wife 25%
Ok, so... 500 is 1/3 of 1500, 667 is 1/3 of 2000 (and 750 is 37% of 2000) and 1000 is 1/3 of 3000, but since that adds up more than 2000, and the percentage he gave his second wife was bigger than what he left his first wife, he ended up giving 500 to the first, and 750 to the other two.
