Re: Song/Band name ideas

That goes for ALL bands not just metal.
Some people think cheese while it may mean something else for someone else.

Remember Finger 11 (song Paralized, Canadian 'rock' Band from Toronto I think)
They use to be called Rainbow Butt Monkeys in highschool and early on. That's cheese.

I mean cheese in the sense of dumb.

A real 'cheesy' name for a metal band is 'Metal'

Re: Song/Band name ideas

I just think metal bands with the words "death" or "pain" or "carnage" or stuff like that in them are as typical as a rapper named Lil' Jed or Young Bumble or whatever the hell they put after "Lil'" or "Young".

Re: Song/Band name ideas

What you may think of being creative may end up sounding cheesy to a real metalhead. You can think it's cheesy all you want but that's the naming style for Metal. Anyway, if some metal band tries to be creative, it just ends up being stupid like Funny Banana Monkeys. That's not creative, that's just stupid.

Re: Song/Band name ideas

This may seem a bit out of character for me, 'old Joe', but when I was young...

I had a metal band, well, not all mine (I only played bass and sang) but along with a few cohorts we formed a band called

THE FUCKED UP DEFORMED SHITBAG BABIES

(Sez, it's ok to have a 'double Falcon facepalm' moment since I brought this up again)

and our lyrics centered around around the nuclear issue, with specific emphasis on the suffering of the unborn.

People were not ready for what we had made, as it was in the mid 80's.
Metallica was one of the heaviest bands around. (now they play it in the grocery store as BGM)

To get an idea of the sound we were going for you may want to check out the band
Amon Amarth
(my favorite)
and this should give you an understanding of our musical style.

I still laugh at people's reaction to when I would grab a bass or even sometimes a guitar and started playing our riffs - they couldn't believe how fast and furious the music was.

Did I mention this was during the lame 80's ?
If any of you are not familiar with 80's music, I believe LunaAngelRose started a thread on it in the 'Recommendations' section.
Just try to imagine Amon Amarth playing back to back with that stuff....

Yeah, I'm still fucking hardcore in case you were wondering.

I can't touch that.
Metal is really just extremely loud opera at its core, aimed mostly at the church, and secondly at the establishment.
Very epic.
Of course that does not apply to every band out there.

Punk seems to be more extreme in its brutal simplicity, and draws its strength from spontaneous soul-like outbursts.
It seems to be aimed mostly at the establishment, and secondly at personal and societal issues.
Just my opinion anyways.
I like a bit of all music, whether I 'get it' or not, and no matter what my 'favorite' may be at this moment.
I hope you do too.

Yeah I don't like any certain type of music I like certain songs. When people ask I usually tell them I like Johnny Cash and Tupac, I think that gives a good idea of what I'm saying.

Maybe YOU AND I were into/aware of them, but most people were certainly not since I remember people coming up to me in the 80's saying they were
'worried about what I was doing to my soul' by listening to METALLICA, which they were convinced was the devil's music.
(Same as what they said about The Beatles, and Elvis, and Twisted Sister.....)

(I wonder who could be behind this 'heavy metal', hmmm? Oh I don't know, could it possibly be...
SATAN?)

these albums were major FUDSB influences even though those guys wouldn't listen to them, (my bandmates) I used them to help me fall asleep:
Slayer's 'Haunting the Chapel' , Hellhammer's 'Apocalyptic Raids' , Venom's 'Black Metal' , etc.
Oh, such lovely dark melodies....

The fact we were WAY too young and immature (and liked to party too much, yeah at that age) led to our downfall, and one death many years later - I never did hear what happened, just that one of us had died and it was likely some drug overdose (not pot that is certain) but the guy I am talking about was very crazy and so this was no surprise, really.
Sorry man, I don't mean to harsh out your buzz.
You are right, though.

HOLY SHIT it's the REAL CHURCH LADY!
check it out I just found her - is she scary or what?

Well maybe the reason punk seems more brutal is because you can understand the lyrics? I never liked much metal because most of it is just people trying to sound all mean about lyrics I can't understand unless I really concentrate on them(which is annoying and unrewarding most times).

Re: Song/Band name ideas

I can't stand Death Metal. It's way too hardcore for me, I can't make out a single word of what they're saying, or discern any notes, that's how much they down tune their guitars. I remember my friend tried getting me into Cannibal Corpse... One of the worst experiences of my life. I was scared that there was people out there who actually thought this shit up.

The most hardcore I go is probably Metallica or Killswitch, but anything more hardcore than that I probably won't like.

Lol, Joe had a metal band? That's funny. I didn't know you were a metalhead, haha.

I guess it is pretty hard to tell from some of the stuff I write here on RU.
What you said about Cannibal Corpse is true - I think they are all about shock value, and I can't understand their songs either.

Yes.
You have the right idea, just like I said before Metal is extremely loud opera.
Sounding 'mean' about it is to add intensity and passion, which unfortunately also makes it hard to understand.
A friend asked me once why all the yelling is in Metal, and so I sang a bit of a Metal song in a soft serene voice and asked him if that sounded OK with the distorted guitars and pounding drums.
He got the point of why it is important to be loud.

Punk doesn't need to be sang in a loud voice for the most part since the subject matter usually doesn't involve death, torture, war, etc. and has much more to do with everyday life experiences and personality / political piss-offs.
(to me it seems like a personal conversation with the listener, which does not require yelling)

I think I should explain something about liking 'Metal' to everyone:

It is very much the same as people who like eating really hot peppers, the kind that make your face sweat and make your mouth feel afire.
Only a very intense personality is going to come back for more of that sensation.
Most people can't get past the pain of the first experience and make efforts to avoid it in the future.

So far as music goes, the only thing that gives me a similar burn (to that of Metal or hot peppers) is drum and bass.
(not the ambient soft stuff; I like ragga dubplate, dark drum&bass, and songs with wicked phat deep bass)
There is just something 'dark' and 'sinister' in those deep bass notes 40- 15Hz (and lower) that shake everything in the room.
eg: Spor - Deathray. Noisia - Lost Cause
...but I also like most other music.....

Re: Song/Band name ideas

I know you said it didn't apply to all bands, I was just pointing it out. I like all types of Metal I like some death metal, but there are a lot of bands I don't like, can't stand -core, almost everything that ends in core sucks balls, minus hardcore punk, I'm talking about grindcore, metalcore and that shit.
I heard a metal band a while ago that did nothing but melodic singing, and to tell you the truth it was pretty awesome, but then again some people like that sort of stuff and others don't, I'll go from Unearth or Testament to neo-classical, instrumental soundtracks, and the likes
