Mega Man's Ignoble Fighting Game Fate

Our buddy Mega Man's been MIA since the unfortunate summer cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3, so you can safely bet the announcement of his upcoming appearance in the Sony-bound Street Fighter X Tekken (SFXT) caused some excitement -- especially in our office. But, as seen in the above image, this version of Mega Man isn't the one we've come to know and love; no, the minds at work behind this Capcom/Namco crossover have decided to pay "homage" to his bizarre portrayal on the box of the first NES Mega Man. Sure, it's a fine tribute to one of the most infamously incompetent pieces of cover art, but -- especially at this point in his career -- does Mega Man deserve to be relegated to joke status?

Mega Man's role in SFXT may seem like innocent fun, but it amounts to more salt in the wound for fans of the Capcom series, who just lived through the bulldozing of two projects starring this classic Capcom character -- but I don't think anyone's wearing a black armband for Mega Man Universe. Honestly, Mega Man in SFXT makes perfect sense, but in this form, he feels like a meme gone horribly wrong; we've been cracking wise about Constipated Dwarf Man for 25 years, so the joke eventually became one of the easiest go-tos for video game comedy. But I guess in our modern times when Internet humor can only exist within faux motivational posters or rage comics, people like their jokes as obvious as possible.

The odd addition of girth is what makes this new model of Mega Man so jarring; games like the Japan-only Segagaga (left) and Banjo-Kanzooie: Nuts and Bolts (right) each showed former gaming characters in less-than-dignified states, though Mega Man never came close to reaching the same levels of shame as the characters seen above. Still, this bizarre depiction of Mega Man somehow received the blessing of his creator, though that may be because Inafune has no choice in the matter and would rather look like a good sport than a bitter ex-employee. Whatever the case, Mega Man deserves better -- and even if Capcom intended to spoof the character, they could have at least used a joke that hasn't already been done twice in video game form. Okay, so Mega Man Universe never had the chance to disappoint us all, but the damnable evidence still exists:

i agree, its not that he is gross(which he is)
and its not that by himself the man looks stupid(which he does)
its that he disgraces megaman in the costume...
i want to hit capcom for disturbing the franchise that made them famous...

Anyone taking this seriously is missing the point. It's a reference to the misguided box art of the NES MM. Btw I never even heard about this until recently. When I was a kid we spent like two seconds looking at the cover of the game, all the good stuff was on the back or in the book.

What disturbs me about that image is that Mega Mas is supposed to be a robot, but that thing is clearly not a robot!

I like that rendition of Megaman. Sure, it may be "disgraceful" in some people's eyes, but I like that it is paying homage to an often forgotten part of Megaman history.

Not only that, I tend to enjoy the whole "hero past his prime" thing. My favorite Batman comic, The Dark Knight Returns, is based around that concept.

Sorry buddy, same thing. Jude Law was an android in that movie. Androids are robots that are built to simulate humans. Data was basically an incomplete version, his brother Lore was the finished version but his emotions caused him to be unstable and evil.

To define the android/robot thing better:
All androids are robots, but not all robots are androids.
R2-D2 is a robot, C3P0 is an android.

Better? I thought I explained it pretty clearly. Btw technically both R2D2 and C3PO are droids, George Lucas coined that term for his robots. C3PO would not be an android because he's obviously not designed to look human, just humanoid.
