Parents nearly always say things like this.
Your story reminds me of someone I knew {and I know it's likely someone will ask so I'm just going to add this story is NOT about me}:
He was kicked out of the house at an early age for
smoking pot, shunned by the entire family and 'cut off', as they say.
Years later as an adult this same guy got back in touch with his family, and at that time he was growing weed, and when his mother found out
how much money could be made, suddenly it was Ok and he gained her approval.
