Tried the Topo, it was a no - go.
Nothing is recognizable, in my opinion.
The file is huge, like a server file.

Seriously, you should at least try MACE - it's really cool {updated, yes}.
MC Dungeon is second only to 'Chocolate Adventure' Better Dungeons mod, sadly not yet updated but this doesn't stop you from swapping files to the old 1.2.5 to create a new world.

Chocolate is the one I keep going on about with the armored mobs, Horses you can ride {VERY cool} , Ostrich - like birds you can ride {even MORE cool}, Dungeons beyond compare, with great treasures like enchanted items, guarded by bosses like Necromancers, and of course the infamous Goblin riding a giant Silverfish~!!

Some of those other mods seem really cool, like the one that takes real topographical maps and puts them into MC.

MACE is a stand - alone world generator which creates random cities within the world, as many as you want and there are many other options as well.

I use it along with MC Dungeon {listed directly below MACE on the same page}, another stand - alone program, but not a world generator; instead, MC Dungeon adds in random dungeons, again, as many as you want and there are lots of options with this one.

Really fun.

You're too worried about being slow. Chat is not fast. On the rare occasion that several people are chatting at once it can seem hectic but usually it's 2-3 people just bantering about pretty much anything. I've heard other people express that they wish you'd join us. You should just bite the bullet and give it another go.

I don't know what MACE is supposed to mean.

I do much better in the main forum, and even so I can't keep up most of the time.

AS for playing SMP, I may stick my nose in the door sometime.
In the meantime I'm busy making a MACE wizard tower my own and have just conquered a nether fortress { nothing in it, a dud}
