Don't be so sure. It's a very popular game, lots of people have it. It's up to you though, but I honestly think it's worth investing in if you can find the game of the year edition.
-
No it can't be like WoW, a MMOrpg, that would mean it had a constant world with lots of players. They way you describe it sounds like 2-4 player coop. That is cool but I'd end up just playing with you since none of my friends have it.

there is multiplayer, it's just like WoW or something like that.
-
Ah well maybe it's not for me. I can deal with no mulitplayer but this sounds like a game I wouldn't want to play solo.

part 2 (part 1 below, because of letter limits :-/)
Edit: Just realised that you might think the online is like thousands of people off doing different things, but it's not like that. It's team-work and you can split off in the areas themselves, but you still have to all be in the same area of the game.

That's the thing, it cost me 40 bucks for all of it with all expansion packs. Each expansion is about 1200 points normally which is about 60 bucks for you guys in the states and the game itself is probably 10-20 bucks now as well. So If you find the game of the year edition like I did then it's so worth it.
I don't know about the online community. I see it as a better game to play with friends, and luckily I have 2 friends that had it and they knew another guy so we all started a game with fresh characters. So the thing with the online is that randomly playing online would most likely mean playing with people at much different levels and points of the story than you. I don't think that would be terribly great. That's why the four of us all agreed not to use those characters unless all 4 of us were online, in order to stay at the same levels and whatnot. I have a separate single player character, same race though.

I've heard about the various weapons but I've also heard that most of the differences are barely noticeable so it ends up being lots of the same guns with palette swaps.
How is the online? I know the game is really popular but if the online community is mostly dead it might be a deal breaker.
How cheap did you buy it for?

part 3
Sorry, for the long message but I describe stuff like this, it's what I do. One thing about the guns is that you also need to be certain levels to wield certain ones. Same goes for shields and upgrades which you can also buy. You can even get all this equipment in vending machines around the world much like Bioshock. The game also has 4 expansion packs which as far as I know right now add additional areas you can visit and possibly more weapons? I don't know much about that yet. I have 2 games going, one 4 player one and one 1-player one.

part 2
there is 4 character classes that have different abilities and different possible abilities to gain. (ex: Siren can go invisible, and is a lot better with SMG's & Pistols). Basic RPG stuff, but this is a first person shooter. Basically the way I see it is that I like RPG's, but I always wanted 2-4 player RPG's, now you can do that. YOu can play with other friends, locally or online nd go through the game like normal with harder enemies or go solo. It's also a first person shooter by gearbox, one of my favourite FPS companies. It's a picture perfect Idea for a game in my mind, it's massive, it's a shooter that is also an RPG that can be 4-player co-op.

Part 1
Well, you wanted to know about borderlands, so I can tell you a bit now. I've only played it 3 hours so far I believe but the first impression is great, there is literally thousands and thousands of different guns in the game since each one you find is almost never the same and they are all ranked on a basis of fire rate, power, and accuracy. Each of those categories can have as little of a .1 difference from another similar gun that can exist in the game. On top of that you can find mods or modded guns that have things like fire bullets 100% of the time or other elements (I've only found a fire pistol.)
