It varies what Tenser does, he tries to make all of them fun. There are also activity trophies (most active), dunce (you don't want this, it's for too many infractions which is warnings), community (most friends, comments, and something else I forget), and posting champ. Right now though there is something called Defender of the crown which just got reopened because it was closed for the tournament, you can win badges in that if you beat a defender in a game. BUT the game must not have any scores besides your own and they cannot be farmable. Farmable is racking up points without naturally progressing through the game, which is frowned upon. Example of that would be something like Double Dragon 2, beating up player 2 to gain the high score. Btw here's the link to it: link. Trophies go one of two ways: Team Trophies (good portion of mine come from that) and Individual Trophies. Team trophies is you must be on one of four teams to compete. If your team wins (Eternal Champions won the last one thanks to the people who actually showed), you are rewarded a badge. Individual trophies can range from a card creating contest link to something like getting the best time in punch out link.

RU recognizes a bunch of different controllers from the get go. I have used everything from Logitech Precision Gamepads, to the regular corded Xbox 360 controller. Most work. There are a few systems that you need additional software to use a controller with. I recommend Xpadder and Pinnacle for that.
