Zanac
Zanac » Nintendo
ZANAC A.I., a 2D shoot them up game. You are flying fighter model ZANAC, a ship built by 256 Riot Fleet as man's last hope against total annihilation. On board are special weapons to help you blast your way through twelve screens of enemy creatures and destroy the systems home base. Zanac is divided into 12 "areas", which look like planets. The various locations range from deserts to jungles and from oceans to industrial zones. The has many different types of enemies.Zanac's unique artificial intelligence program can intensify the action based upon your level of skill. The better you are, the more powerful "The System". Examples of the A.I. (but not limited to) in this game: the enemies are generally coming randomly with their behavior based on factors like the position your ship in the screen, the place you last died, the shoot speed of the enemies and bosses do also vary.At the end of each area (level) you'll have to fight the area boss. Area bosses are mainly based around huge, screen filling bunker bases consisting of gun turrets and a "core".You also have limited time for fighting against the area boss, a time out could mean failure in entering the next stage, and with the time running, more and more enemies were attacking as penalty.

The Zaxxon defense system must be destroyed in this isometric-viewed shoot 'em up which was originally hugely successful in the arcades. The game has 3 stages, first taking you through Asteroid City, which is heavily protected by aircraft, guns and missiles. Many barriers are alarmed, leaving you with limited space to progress through, and fire must constantly be dodged.

Stage two is a space shoot out against hordes of enemy aircraft - those you failed to destroy in the first part of the task. Complete this and you reach the final battle with Zaxxon, with the game looping with increased difficulty if you can survive the first time. There are 3 distinct skill levels, while controls involve using forward to dive and back to climb, in the manner of flight simulation.

Zelda II, The Adventure of Link
Zelda II, The Adventure of Link » Nintendo
Zelda II is seen by some as Nintendo's take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
Shortly after the events of The Legend of Zelda, near Link's 16th birthday, he notices a strange mark on the back of his left hand. He seeks out Impa, and she tells him the legend of Zelda?. Long ago, the King of Hyrule ruled the land of Hyrule with a son and daughter. When the king died, the Triforce should have passed onto the Prince. However, he could only inherit the Triforce in part, and thus sought the remaining pieces. When he learned that Zelda knew of their location, he questioned her. She refused, and so the Prince sent his wizard to question her. When he failed, the wizard became furious and cast a sleeping spell on Princess Zelda. The wizard fell dead, but the Prince was left grieving. He had Zelda moved to a room in the North Castle and had her placed on her bed with a red rose in her hand, and hoped that one day, she would awaken and return to life. To ensure this event was never forgotten, the Prince ordered all females born to the royal family from that point on to be named Zelda.

Impa also gives Link an old chest containing six crystals and an old message that claims that the restoration of the crystals to the six palaces in Hyrule will open the path to the Triforce of Courage. Taking the crystals, Link sets out to restore them to their places, defeating powerful palace guardians and learning magic spells to aid him as he seeks to find the Triforce of Courage and break the enchantment on the sleeping Zelda.

Zelda, The Legend of » Nintendo
In this game, you assume the role of an elf named Link. In a top-down view, you tour the world populated not only by monsters, but also by people who want to help you, shops, and more. Here, you will fight everything from bats to dragons, and will be equipped with an assortment of games and magical items.

The game play is in an arcade style. Every time you die, you can opt to continue, upon which you will appear again at the starting location with all the items you were able to collect so far. Or you can save the game and quit or simply start a new one. There is no possibility to save the game in the middle (well, there is but that's not the original Nintendo approach).

Zen: Intergalactic Ninja
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja » Nintendo
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, based on a comic book of the same name, is a story about a militant environmentalist ninja named Zen. He has been assigned by a group a green, pointy-headed aliens to come to earth and stop environmental pollution by any means necessary. Eventually, he will have to find the big polluter, Lord Contaminous. The game play consists of side scrolling and isometric 3D scrolling action. Zen can run, jump, slice with this stick, or use power-ups as the game requires.

One stage has Zen planting time bombs in a toxic factory and attempting to escape within 99 seconds. Standing in his way are roving lasers, security robots, and floating conveyor belts. The second stage takes place in an acid rain-drenched forest. Zen must revive the flowers in the forest with his photon stick while beating off acid rain-spewing floating mechanical devices.

The next stage takes place on an off shore oil rig that is going up in flames. Zen must grab fire extinguisher power-ups and rescue trapped rig workers while dodging sentient oil slicks and raining fireballs. Another stage is called the High Speed Railway stage. The goal is to stop the garbage men spreading nuclear waste. Zen is in a mining cart racing underground and fighting other enemies in carts. Zen can make this cart jump, which we will have to do often in order to survive the dangers of the mine.

Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel
Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel » Genesis
Introducing our three chief protagonists: Aero the Acrobat, a daredevil bat who is the star of the circus; Edgar Ektor, clown prince and mean guy extraordinare; and Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Ektor's chief henchman whose sense of duty and loyalty seem strangely misplaced.

Probably the most concerted effort by a software house in cloning the success of the Sonic series. Gets old fast, ridiculous in places, but you never lack for action. These games sold by the bucketful when they were first released, so Sunsoft's stratagem must have worked.

In Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, a spinoff from the Aero the Acrobat games, Zero gets the chance to play hero for a change - the best of the series, it compares well with the original Sonic in its own way.

Zero Tolerance
Zero Tolerance » Genesis
As your dropship screams toward the strangely silent space outpost Europe-1, your commander briefs you on the mission ahead. Your detachment of the Planetary Defense Corps has been called in to find out who attacked the station, and (more importantly) if they're still around. You won't have much time to find out, though - Europe-1's nuclear reactor was damaged in the firefight, and it's building towards a meltdown that will incinerate the entire station. That said, you gather your gear and debark through the boarding dock, anxious at what lies ahead....

The only real Wolfenstein 3D clone in existence for the MegaDrive, but this offers strategy far beyond Wolf3D. It's way too long, though, and it tends to get tedious before you're halfway through - especially when you have to hunt down EVERY single monster to advance to the next level - hence the title.

Zero Wing » Genesis
An alien being known only as CATS has disabled an Earth exploratory cruiser, leaving it helpless in deep space. Fearing a further attack that could result in the loss of his ship, its captain orders every space fighter on board armed and launched to deal with any unwelcome visitors that CATS might send along....

A moderately playable shoot 'em up. The ability to catch and toss around enemy ships with a tractor beam is a nice innovation, but limited power-ups and awful ship designs hurt this title. All texts are in English, but they're so poorly translated that they're hilarious. THis is the game that sparked Internet phenomenon "All your base are belong to us" in 2001.

Zippy Race
Zippy Race » Nintendo
Zippy Race is another one of those games that has you racing across the United States from checkpoint to checkpoint. While the premise of Zippy Race isn't unique, it does provide a quick source of fun and a bit of freshness every time you loop the game.

The loops play a fairly interesting roll in the game play, actually, as you'll be required to play differently on subsequent loops. Each loop is another ?CC? class (e.g. The starting 250CC) and loops beyond the first add 60 km/h to your maximum speed. Now, since you start at the 250CC with a top speed of 180, this means on Loop 4, you'll be going twice as fast (360 km/h) than you were when you began. Obviously, the challenge isn't quiescent, it picks up very quickly. Even going at 240km/h could present some problems as the environment will become a real threat.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Zombies Ate My Neighbors » Super Nintendo
Influenced by low-budget horror films of the 1950s (and beyond), and by the shooting action of Robotron: 2084, Zombies Ate My Neighbors has one or two players (simultaneous) running around suburbia, using a squirt gun to blast mummies, pod plants, and other creepy creatures. Cheerleaders, tourists, and other innocents should be rescued, and footballs, bazookas, weed-eaters, and other weapons can be picked up for added firepower. Additional items include keys for opening doors and Monster Potion that turns your character into a purple beast capable of bashing through walls. Filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, fast-paced gameplay, tons of levels, and cartoonish graphics and sound effects, Zombies Ate My Neighbors breathes new life into your Super NES.

A Gauntlet type game with it's tongue very firmly in it's cheek with the added strategy of finding all your neighbors before you can exit to the next level or they get eaten! It's a great little game and far superior to the SNES version in every aspect except perhaps the sound.
