Yie Ar Kung Fu
Yie Ar Kung Fu » Nintendo
Based on the popular arcade game, Yie Ar Kung-Fu follows Oolong's quest to become a Kung-Fu master. Of course this involves fighting a wide range of opponents in a traditional one-on-one 2D environment. Oolong has a wide range of attacks he can use to lower his opponent's life bar, including traditional punching and kicking attacks as well as jumping ones. Opponents are well armed with unique weapons and attacks, so Oolong's task won't be easy.

Yie Ar Kung-Fu
Yie Ar Kung-Fu » Coin Op
A classic one-on-one fighting game; "Yie Ar Kung-fu" pits a single player against a procession of distinctive, and often armed opponents. While somewhat limited in gameplay terms, "Yie Ar Kung-Fu" introduced a major innovation to the beat-em-up genre as it was the first one-on-one fighter to offer a progression of truly different opponents for the player to defeat. This is something that would later be adopted by Capcom for its legendary "Street Fighter" series; as well as SNK and countless others. Many of Yie Ar's eleven opponents are armed with a wide variety of weapons, such as a nunchuks, throwing stars, a chain, a sword and a club.

Yo! Noid
Yo! Noid » Nintendo
The Noid, that red character from Domino's Pizza commercials during the 80s, had a game of its own for NES.

It is another 2D jump and run platform for NES, but with a strange useridea and cartoonish and cheerful graphics. The weird character has to beat pizza delivery boys using a yo-yo.

Yogi Bear's Cartoon Capers
Yogi Bear's Cartoon Capers » Genesis
Hey there, it's Yogi Bear - possibly the most conniving creature to ever grace Jellystone Park. Now you can help him have the run of the place while trying to avoid pitfalls, traps, and the park rangers. Based on the popular animated TV show.

I must admit that the programmers did a good job graphicswise - it looks just like the show. Poor gameplay is the counterweight that dooms this effort to failure. In short, a notable failure.

Yoshi's Cookie
Yoshi's Cookie » Nintendo
Yoshi's Cookie is a fast-paced puzzle game that can be enjoyed by everyone as it is easy to play, but challenging to complete. To play, you move the randomly placed cookies into rows and columns of cookies with similar patterns. When you successfully assemble a row or column of the same cookies, the line will disappear, and you can begin on a new row or column. The "Yoshi" cookie is very special in both the 1-player and the 2-player game. Since the Yoshi Cookie is the key to both games, you must use it wisely.

In Yoshi's Cookie, Mario must sort and stack five different types of cookies as they appear in rows on the playing field. Shuffle them around to create either a horizontal or vertical match and they will disappear from the screen. Eliminate all cookies from the playing field and you'll progress to a more difficult level. There are a total of 100 different stages, not including bonus rounds. You can also challenge a second player or the computer for simultaneous action on a split-screen. Other notable features include three types of speed (low, medium and high) and three different music tracks. Players can also choose to play as either Mario, Yoshi, Princess Toadstool or Bowser. Anyone for some dessert?

A radical departure from Super Mario World (which featured the first appearance of Yoshi), Yoshi's Safari is a Super Scope 6 game viewed from a Super Mario Kart-like perspective. Perched aboard the delightful dinosaur, players aim the gargantuan gun at the screen, firing away at Koopa, Bowser and other Mario enemies. If Yoshi is hit with friendly fire, he will turn around and give the player a dirty look, exemplifying the cute, kid-friendly nature of this game. The action is linear, the game is short and easy to beat, and the background music is delightful, further defining this as a juvenile title. The pseudo 3D graphics are very impressive (the game looks even better than the "real" Mario games), but the shooting sounds can get annoying. The best thing about the game is a special two-player mode, which lets one gamer guide Yoshi (who runs and jump over gaps) while the other player uses the Scope.

The game itself is quite simple. The premises of the game is essentially platforming mixed with combat, reminescent of Castlevania. Let's not call it an exact copy, but it certainly will be similar to some of it's elements. The main objective is to clear your pathway out of the levels presented to you using the weapon you currently have. The game is easy for the most part, especially for Arcade and NES vets.

In his never ending quest for power, the Shadow King has released his evil minions on a peaceful land. As young Merlin, it is your job (with a little help from the Lady of the Lake) to destroy the king's forces and restore order and peace.

As you travel throughout the land, you can pick up items and weapons such as matches, combs, shooting stars, lightning bolts, silver stars, snow flakes, air bubbles, balloons, bubble wands, flowers, and lanterns. These and other items help you do such things as fly, attack the enemies, clone your image, and beautify yourself to distract the enemies. With an assist from the Lady of the Lake, you can use gems to create magical items. Flowers can also be used to create magic.

The good guys in this game include: mermaids, who can provide you with air, an elf, who can give you a new rune for your staff, and Melody, a fair maiden who Merlin is most taken with. The Shadow King's minions include: the dumb, but brutal Oinkmers, the hooded Shroom Goons, the man-eating Vile-Ettes, the thorny Snarl Shoots, and the overly fertile Spyder. At the end of the game, you must defeat the Shadow King himself.

You are Adol Christian, a red-haired adventurer and expert swordsman. One day you encounter a fortuneteller who sends you on a quest to find information about the six books of Ys. It appears that there was once an ancient land called Ys, whose secret was sealed in those six books. Before long you learn that the six books were all stolen by the evil wizard Dark Fact (Malificus in PC version). It is your task to defeat the villain and to discover the secret of Ys!

"Ys" is an action RPG with original combat: instead of pressing the "attack" button, you simply run into the enemies you encounter. You do more damage if you run into them from the back or from the sides - a head-to-head collision might result in Adol's death if the monster is stronger than him. You gain gold and experience points for defeating your foes; once you have gained enough experience, you level up and become stronger. You can buy and equip swords, armor, shields, and other accessories.

Ys 2: Ancient Ys - Vanished The Final Chapter
Ys 2: Ancient Ys - Vanished The Final Chapter » Nintendo
This is the second game in the long-running Ys action RPG series. A bright light shot up from Dahm Tower in the end of the first game, and our hero Adol Christian is awakened by a young girl who finds him lying on the ground. She introduces herself as Lilia and tells Adol he is in the land of Ys. Finally he was able to establish a connection between his world and this mysterious land! But finding the gateway to Ys is not enough: Adol must stop the evil entity that his archenemy Dark Fact served. And his foes already know where he is...

This game is a direct sequel to what PC players know as Ancient Land of Ys (of which the original NES version was simply called Ys), and is also the same game (story-wise) as the second part of Ys Book I & II for TurboDuo. The game play utilizes an unusual action RPG combat style, where you don't press any attack button, but run into your enemies in order to cause damage. You should choose the angles and the measure of contact with the enemy carefully, otherwise you'll be dead. You can (and should) level up, perform quests for village people, gather money, and upgrade your weapons and inventory, like in any other RPG.

Ys 3 - Wanderer from Ys
Ys 3 - Wanderer from Ys » Genesis
The third installment in the popular Ys series of RPGs (and the only one for the Genesis) finds our heroes traveling to the town of Kenai, where a mysterious evil has taken root.

Great graphics, great sound, good gameplay, and an intriguing plot (albeit a gawdawful long intro to wade through - good thing you can skip it). This is one of the all-time best Genesis RPGs, and is a heckuva lot better than that laughable SNES version....

An excellent RPG, but doesn't have the playability of Ultima, Phantasy Star and Spellcaster. Even so, it's a real puzzler.

Yuusuke...Botan...Kazuma...Kurama...Hiei...and more. They're all here in this Beat 'em up, which both Otanooki Temple and Harry Tuttle of the Dump have called "the best fighter ever made for the Genesis." Take your your choice of characters, each with unique talents and attacks (rei gun, reikinoken, rose whip, jagan, dragon spirit, etc.) Inspired by the popular anime series that first premiered on Japanese television in 1992.

A strange mix of adventure, RPG, and fighting, with good graphics. There is probably a lot more depth to this game than meets the eye.

The unique format used in this game is that of cinematic battles played out as you put in the proper button presses.

This game is kinda strange. It's like a One-on-One fighter… However, it doesn't take place in real time. You basically enter your commands (which are either punches or special moves), then the game decides what the opponent is going to do, and decides the outcome. Unfortunately, it's a very easy game, so don't expect to be captivated for too long.
