Combination paint-and-activity program with cameos by Sonic the Hedgehog and various other characters from G/MD games designed to keep the younger set entertained.

Reminds me of a digital "big fun book," except that this one comes with its own crayons and paints. Not worth the trouble unless you have kids or are a serious G/MD cart collector. This is one the few titles for the console to support the Sega Mouse, and some versions came packaged with it.

Wai Wai World » Nintendo
The story of Wai Wai World is the usual tale of ''Hero saves the world from evil'' however, instead of a lone soldier going up against unspeakable odds this hero is gonna need some help. We begin the game with a panicking Dr. Cinnamon trying to contact Konamiman (Those who've played ''The Goonies 2'' probably remember him) and inform him of the current danger Konami World has been placed in. Upon arrival, Konamiman states that saving Konami World is too difficult a task for one person and he'll need the help of his missing allies if they are to stand a chance. Dr. Cinnamon agrees and sends Konamiman and along with his android, Konamigirl, to search for the missing heroes in there designated game worlds.

WarGames is a video game for ColecoVision based on MGM's 1983 film WarGames. The object is to avert a nuclear counterstrike by using anti-ballistic missiles, interceptor jets, submarines, and a laser satellite to protect cities and bases from incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles, jets, and submarines.

The United States is divided into six sectors, each with its own cities and bases. As cities and bases are destroyed, the Defense Condition (DEFCON) status for that sector decreases. The DEFCON level for each sector is factored into the total DEFCON status. When the total DEFCON status is at 1 for 60 seconds, or when all cities and bases have been destroyed, a counterstrike is launched and the game is over. The game is won by preventing a counterstrike long enough for a cease-fire to be reached.

War of the Worlds
War of the Worlds » Audio
The War of the Worlds was the Halloween episode of Mercury Theatre on the Air, October 30, 1938. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles and adapted from the H. G. Wells' novel of the same name.

The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a 'sustaining show' (it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the dramatic effect.

Some listeners heard only a portion of the broadcast, and in the atmosphere of tension and anxiety just prior to World War II, took it to be a news broadcast. Newspapers reported that panic ensued, people fleeing the area, others thinking they could smell poison gas or could see flashes of lightning in the distance. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated.

In the days following the adaptation, however, there was widespread outrage. The program's news-bulletin format was decried as cruelly deceptive by some newspapers and public figures, leading to an outcry against the perpetrators of the broadcast, but the episode launched Orson Welles to fame.

An estimated 6 million heard the CBS broadcast (NBC at the same time had an estimated audience of 30 million). 1.7 million believed it to be true and 1.2 million were genuinely frightened. Within a month, there were 12,500 newspaper articles about the broadcast or its impact. Adolf Hitler cited the panic as "evidence of the decadence and corrupt condition of democracy."

Later studies suggested this "panic" was less widespread than newspapers suggested. During this period, many newspapers were concerned that radio, a new medium, would render the press obsolete. In addition, this was a time of yellow journalism, and as a result, journalists took this opportunity to demonstrate the dangers of broadcast by embellishing the story, and the panic that ensued, greatly.

Many listeners missed the repeated notices that the broadcast was fictional, partly because the Mercury Theatre (an unsponsored "cultural" program with a relatively small audience) ran opposite the popular Chase and Sanborn Hour on NBC. About 15 minutes into the Chase and Sanborn program the first comic sketch ended and a musical number began, and many listeners began tuning around the dial at that point. Welles knew the schedule of the Chase and Sanborn show, and scheduled the first report from Grover's Mill at the 12-minute mark to heighten the audience's confusion. As a result, some listeners happened upon the CBS broadcast at the point the Martians emerge from their spacecraft.

Nothing like The War of the Worlds broadcast had been performed before, so listeners were accustomed to accepting newsflashes as reliable.

The show had only three statements concerning the fictional nature of the program: at the beginning, at 40 minutes, and at the end. This structure is similar to earlier Mercury Theatre broadcasts: due to the lack of sponsorship, Welles and company were able to schedule breaks at will, depending on the pacing of a narrative. Furthermore, the show's technique of jumping between scenes and narratives made it hard for the audience to distinguish between fact and fiction, so it is understandable that they were no more likely to perceive the three statements of the fictional nature of the program as being 'outside' the narrative, than they were to perceive the introduction (and subsequent interruption) of the music as being 'inside' the narrative.

While War of the Worlds was in progress, some residents in northeastern cities went to ask neighbors what was happening (many homes still did not have telephones). As the story was repeated, rumors began and caused some panic.

Contemporary accounts spawned urban legends, many of which have come to be accepted through repetition. Several people reportedly rushed to the "scene" of the events in New Jersey to see the unfolding events, including a few geologists from Princeton University who went looking for the "meteorite" that had fallen near their school. Some people, who had brought firearms, reportedly mistook a farmer's water tower for a Martian Tripod and shot at it.

Initially Grover's Mill was deserted, but crowds developed. Eventually police were sent to control the crowds. To people arriving later in the evening, the scene really did look like the events being narrated, with panicked crowds and flashing police lights streaming across the masses.

Edgar Bergen and Don Ameche, who were continuing their Chase and Sanborn Hour broadcast on NBC, are often credited with "saving the world". It is said many listeners were reassured by hearing their tones on a neighboring station.

War of the Worlds Audio Book
War of the Worlds Audio Book » Audio
The War of the Worlds (1898) is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells describing an invasion of late Victorian England by Martians equipped with advanced weaponry. It is a seminal depiction of an alien invasion of Earth.

The novel is narrated by an unnamed writer of scientific articles. Throughout the narrative he struggles to reunite with his wife, while witnessing the Martians rampaging through the southern English counties.

The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian fears and prejudices. At the time of publication it was classed as a scientific romance. Since then, it has influenced much literature and other media, spawning several films, radio dramas, comic book adaptations, a television series, and sequels or parallel stories by other authors.

Written in a journalistic style, as if a factual account of the invasion, which helps to make the story reasonable. The chapter headings are also similar to newspaper headlines. The narrator is a middle class scientific journalist living in Woking, south west of London, characteristics which make him very similar to Wells himself at the time of writing. The Narrator describes most of the events from first hand observation, often with precise and scientific detail, but also reports events later told to him by his younger brother, to provide a wider perspective on the invasion. The narrator and his brother are not named; neither are the key characters of the artilleryman and the curate.

In War Room for the Colecovision, tensions between the United States and Russia have escalated to the point of nuclear warfare. The player controls a system similar to the proposed Strategic Defense Initiative. After skilllevel from 0-9 has been selected, the player will detect waves of attacking satellites on the national radar at the top of the screen.

The player views the larger portion of the playfield, which shows a top down regional view of the action, with your hunter-killer satellite. The player guides the satellite around the United States, hover over enemy satellites, and blast them with a Star Wars type laser. Each enemy is color-coded (black, gray, yellow or red) to indicate how much time is left until impact.

In addition to knocking out enemy satellites before they can destroy cities, the player must maintain production of goods and services that will keep the country able to defend itself against wave after wave of nuclear attack. Cities produce four types of supplies: food, raw materials, machinery and laser fuel.

To gather supplies, the player must enter cities by positioning the satellite cursor over one of them on national map. The player will then appear as Uncle Sam, in a 2D action sequence, in which he must run around collecting icons representing the various resources, while avoiding Russian spies. The Russian spies are represented as animated hammer and sickles. If a spy touches the player, the city is lost to the enemy, and that city will be used as a Russian base to launch additional nuclear missiles, if it is not destroyed.

Some destroyed cities will be rebuilt as the game progresses. A free city is received for every 10,000 points scored and four freebies will be given with every fifth wave attack. Food cities require no help, but in order for the other types of cities to continue producing their specialties, you must provide them with supplies.

Raw materials cities require food, Machinery cities need food and raw materials, and Laser Fuel cities cannot function without food, raw materials and machinery. It is your job to keep your cities well stocked. A special City Status screen helps you check a city's supply needs, and it keeps track of how many supplies are in your satellite.

War Room ends only when all your cities have been destroyed.

You and your sister are traipsing along merrily through the forest when - boo! The evil meanie Wardner shows up and kidnaps your sister. Now it's up to you to save her. A perfect conversion of the original arcade game with new items added on every stage.

Gameplay is only average, and jumping across the many hazards to be found is quite tricky and can get on your nerves easily. That's the point, though - as a perfect arcade conversion, it show the same limitations as the original, with no improvements as far as gameplay is concerned. Check it out if you liked the original, otherwise play Ghouls and Ghosts instead.

Wario's Woods
Wario's Woods » Nintendo
Wario's Woods is a puzzle game similar to Tetris or Columns, but with a twist. Instead of directly controlling the monsters and bombs that are falling down, the player controls Toad who has to carry around stacks of monsters and bombs and to combine them in the right way. One bomb plus at least two monsters of the same color have to be combined to make them disappear. If five or more objects are cleared at the same time, a diamond will appear. Destroying the diamond will clear all monsters of the diamond's color. There are four different ways to pick up objects. The A button lets Toad pick up the whole stack that is in front of him, the B button lets him only pick up one object, even if it's in the middle of a stack, the Y button lets him kick a monster or bomb that's in front of him and the X button places him on top of the stack that he is carrying. He can also run up walls and stacks to catch falling objects out of the air or to pick up certain parts of a stack.

There are 5 different modes of play: a "Round Game" in which Toad has to clear numerous levels, a match versus a computer controlled opponent, a two player mode, a "Time Race" mode, and finally, an extensive training mode.

There are some differences between the SNES and NES versions. Due to a lack of buttons, controls are a little different in the NES version (although all the moves from the SNES version are present). Also, there is no vs. mode against the computer, but the "Round Game" mode features two modes of play: one that includes boss-fights on every level ending with a 9.

Wario has taken over the peaceful woods of the Mushroom Kingdom, bringing unwelcome monsters along with him. Help Toad put an end to this madness by eliminating the monsters in Nintendo's Wario's Woods. Gameplay involves controlling Toad as he struggles to move the falling monsters into usergroup of three or more (diagonally, horizontally or vertically).

Your goal is to defeat all of the monsters on the level so you can move onto the next round. Friends Catherine and Sprite will toss bombs from a tree, so match them together with other bombs or monsters of the same color to remove them from the playing field. Wario will make appearances now and then to lower the tree's ceiling, so move quickly. If the entire screen fills up with bombs and monsters, the game will end!

Wario's Woods is for one or two players. Game modes include: Versus Mode against either the computer or a second player, Time Race, Lesson, Round Game, and Option to customize gameplay. A battery in the cartridge enables you to save your progress.

Based on the 1991 feature film, Warlock is a side-view action-adventure game in which the player must find six sacred stones and fight a tough-to-defeat, time-traveling wizard (most of the other bosses are easy to destroy). Skeletons, demons, and other enemies are vanquished via magical blasts and a fun-to-employ orb, which hovers around the hero and maneuvers boomerang-like in four directions. The orb can also be used to grab items. There are tricky puzzles to solve and numerous obstacles to overcome, such as bottomless pits to jump over and rising firestorms to outpace. The backgrounds and music are mood enhancing, but frustrating controls make for a disenchanting experience.
