Wonder Boy II: Wonder Boy in Monster Land - December 11
The plot of Wonder Boy in Monster Land follows the events in its predecessor, Wonder Boy. The game's main protagonist is a young boy named Bock Lee Temjin, in which his friends call him "Tom-Tom". In Wonder Boy Tom-Tom's girlfriend Tanya was kidnapped by the "evil King" and was taken to his woodland kingdom; Tom-Tom set out to the kingdom, defeated the evil King, and saved Tanya. Word spread throughout Wonder Land about Tom-Tom's quest, and people bestowed upon him the title of "Wonder Boy".
Following the evil King's defeat, peace reigned over Wonder Land for eleven years. Then, one day, a fire-breathing dragon called the "MEKA dragon" appeared and terrorized the land. The people, helpless and not skilled in fighting, were defeated by the him and his minions; they quickly took over the land, and Wonder Land became known as "Monster Land". The people send out for Wonder Boy, now a teenager, as Wonder Land's only chance to defeat the monsters and demons who inhabited the land and to defeat the MEKA dragon. The disposed Mayor gives Wonder Boy a sword and a life potion and sets him on his way.

Anyone else trying this? I just got to the last corridor of the last level.
I forgot how hard this game is. I played it nearly every day when I was 11. If you haven't played it before you should probably use a walk through to find all of the hidden stuff.
Re: Wonder Boy II: Wonder Boy in Monster Land - December 11
Such an awesome game! I loved this as a kid and having a go again. I've got past one of the bosses in the ice palace.
One of the great thing with this game is the difficulty escalation is very subtly done - feels like it should all be easy but before you know it you're desperately scrambling around to get some health. The hidden parts are very cool, there's a good mix of the platform and adventure... excellent stuff.
I hate that pig type boss though! A couple of years back I worked through the game using the save state. I just had to finish it, one way or another - but I can't remember how I did it. What a brilliant piece of gaming history - and even in this age of lifelike technologies, it's amazing how a game like this is sstill so much fun to play. It's stood the test of time.
Edit: I remembered something about getting to the dragon.

If you take the ruby before entering the dragon's castle, it weakens the dragon. But, I always have trouble getting there. If you take the bell, and you;re in the maze-like underground chambers, the bell rings when you are heading in the right direction. And when you jump up from the moving rock going up a "chimney" always jump to the right - otherwise you fall back down and have to start again.

That maze drives me crazy. I just got there with full health, legendary everything and couldn't get up those up/down blocks to get out of the chimney. I even got another potion after killing a red knight and still couldn;t get there.

I can't really be objective either since I own the arcade version, the Master version just seems so underwhelming compared to it. Various glitches don't help.
Here's some help for anyone trying for the arcade version.

I beat the PC Engine version.
I can't tell what this game is.
A. Bootleg directly from Sega System 2 arcade to PCE, which would be impressive since they use different CPU (Z80 vs. 6502)
B. Another Hudson knockoff of Sega's Wonderboy series
C. Knockoff of a legit PCE port with bosses redrawn

From what I understand, Hudson was licensed to make the game for the PCE but opted to re-skin it to match the popular Bikkuriman franchise. The actual name of this version of the game is Bikkuriman World.
It is a port, but in my opinion is the best port that give the actual authentic feel of the original arcade game. (Minus the re-skinned bosses.)
I figured you could beat it quick since it is so close to the arcade game game play wise.
